Edwardian Silver Jewellery Stand, Geo. Unite, 1903
Here we have an elegant Edwardian Sterling Silver Jewellery Stand with attached Trinket Dish. The trinket dish is shaped as a clover or shamrock leaf with pierced decoration and scrolling hearts in each lobe. The central stem is formed as a tripod with three hooks for hanging jewellery items, one of which could be used for a lady's pocket watch if desired. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The jewellery stand was made in Birmingham by renowned silversmiths George Unite & Sons and dates to 1903. George Unite & James Hilliard founded the firm in 1825 as Unite & Hilliard. After Hilliard withdrew in the 1830s, George continued by himself before the firm became George Unite & Sons in 1865. The business remained under the management of the Unite family until 1897 when it was taken over by William Lyde who retained the name up until the late 1920s.
Condition is very good, with just a couple of shallow flat spots on the rim plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The jewellery stand is 9.5cm / 3.74ins across and 9.5cm / 3.74ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 48.2g / 1.7oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, in the centre of the trinket dish, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter d for 1903 and the G U makers' mark for George Unite & Sons.
