Artist D’Oyly John, Cecil Rochfort 1906-1993 oil on canvas signed 20x30in Artist Biography At the outbreak of the Second World War, D’OYLY-JOHN took a commission in the Provost Corps and during the 1945 campaign was wounded and temporarily blinded as a result of being blown up by a bomb. It was during the period of convalescence that he took up painting as a pastime but he soon proved himself to be a natural artist of uncommon genius. D’OYLY-JOHN was one of the most successful and brilliant (in both senses of the word) artists of his time. What is his genius and colour sense? It defies explanation, other than that it reflected his personality. He used his genius and colour sense with equanimity in everything he painted. Subjects are made up of several different colours, although to us it may seem to be of one shade or tone, and in this you will realise the brilliance of D’OYLY-JOHN’s technique. In the 1950s and 1960s, his works were sold in print form by one of the major publishers of that time, and thus his work became universally known and popular. A number of his paintings were acquired by the Queen Mother (when she was Queen) for the Royal collection and his work is to be seen in other notable collections throughout the world. D’OYLY-JOHN lived in Rottingdean, near Brighton, and travelled extensively throughout Europe in search of new subjects to glorify his canvases.

Artist Holmes, Walter (b.1936) Pastel 13.5 x 20.5 ins. Signed. Artist Biography Landscape, marine and still life painter in oil, watercolour and pastel illustrator. He was born at Wallsend, Newcastle and after his education at a local grammar school went onto take BSc Geology at King College (now Newcastle University). A diploma in geophysics from Imperial College followed two years later and it was while studying in London that a chance visit to the National Portrait Gallery reawaked a boyhood love for drawing and painting. This led to part time study at Hammersmith and Chelsea School of Art, and on returning to Tyneside to work as a technical editor with a local manufacturing company he began attending Newcastle University, gaining a certificate in art. By 1971 he had made such progress that he was able to uphold his first one man exhibition at Gulbekian Gallery, Newcastle. His work was also shown at the Royal Society of Marine Artists, the Northern Art Show, Shipley Art Gallery (1978). He gained 2nd prize in the John Laing Art Competition in London, 1981. A Sailing Barge and other Shipping off the Dut. Oil on board 11.5 x 19.5 ins. Signed and dated 1882. Artist Biography Henry Redmore is recognised as one of Britain's finest marine painters. His earliest works show the influence of the Scottish marine painter, William Anderson (1757-1837) who resided in Hull for some time. John Ward (1798-1849), another great marine painter from Hull, may well have worked with Redmore. Many of Redmore's works depict shipping in the Humber estuary, off the Yorkshire coast and in the harbours of Whitby and Scarborough. He also visited the South West Coast of England, and pictures are recorded by him of Torbay and ports on the Devon and Cornish coast. It is probable that he travelled to Holland and Germany, with Hull playing an important role in trade between Britain and the continent during the 19th Century. The serenity, stillness, sense of colour and above all the high standard of draughtsmanship account for the popularity of his paintings. The attention Redmore paid to detail shows that he was a careful delineator of shipping and it???s activity helping to create the unique atmosphere in his work appreciated by ???Sea going folk??? and admirers of marine paintings alike.
