Victorian Silver Belt Buckle, Henry Matthews, 1894
This is an attractive late Victorian Sterling Silver Two Part Belt Buckle. The overall buckle is oval with an elaborate pierced design mirrored across the two halves featuring an angel, shells, flowers and scrolls.
The belt buckle was made in Birmingham and is an early piece by noted silversmith Henry Matthews dating to 1894. Henry Matthews registered his mark in 1893 and ran his firm from premises in Vittoria Street in Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter. He made a very wide range of good quality silverware and remained in business up until around 1930.
Condition is good, with no damage to the pierced sections and just a small piece of the vertical central bar missing, plus the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after 130 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The buckle is 9cm / 3.5ins across and 6.5cm / 2.5ins high. It weighs in at a respectable 42.4g / 1.5oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the outer rim of the buckle, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the Gothic date letter u for 1894 and the H M makers' mark for Henry Matthews.
