George V Silver Topped Scent Bottle, B'ham, 1913
This is a charming George V Cut Glass Scent Bottle with a Sterling Silver lid. The glass bottle is slice cut into diamond shaped and tapered panels and has a star cut base. The silver screw top is plain with a gilded interior. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The perfume bottle was made in Birmingham by T.H. Hazlewood & Co and dates to 1913. The firm registered its first mark at Birmingham’s assay office in 1892 and operated from premises in Barr Street in the Jewellery Quarter. They primarily made smoking accessories, dressing table items and tableware, all of consistently good quality. The company ceased trading around 1923/24.
Condition is very good, with no chips or cracks in the glass bottle and just a couple of tiny dings in the silver lid plus the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 110 years of good service. The inner glass stopper is in good condition and needs a firm twist to lock into place. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The bottle stands 5.7cm / 2.2ins high and is 4.3cm / 1.7ins across the body. The lid by itself weighs in at 6.5g / 0.23oz of solid Sterling Silver and all in the perfume bottle weighs 66.8g / 2.3oz.
The hallmarks, on the side of the lid, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter o for 1913 and the T.H.H makers' mark for T.H. Hazlewood & Co.
