George V Silver Jewellery Box, Adie Brothers, 1921
Here we have a smart George V Sterling Silver Jewellery Box. The circular box stands on three fleur-de-lys feet. The hinged lid has engine turned stripes, a pie crust rim and a gilt underside. The body of the box has a blue velvet and satin lining. The circular cartouche on the lid is blank.
The jewellery box was made in Birmingham by Adie Brothers Ltd and dates to 1921. The firm was founded in 1906 when two established Birmingham silversmiths, McKewan & Adie and E.S. Barnsley & Co, were merged under the leadership of Percy Adie to form Adie Brothers Ltd. The company was very successful and produced a wide range of silverware until the 1960s when they were absorbed into British Silverware.
Condition is good with just a couple of small dings in the body and a shallow indent where one foot has been pushed into the body plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 100 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The jewellery box is 7cm / 2.75ins in diameter and stands 3.2cm / 1.25ins high. It weighs in at 116.9g / 4.1oz but this does of course include a small amount from the liner.
The hallmarks, on the side of the body, are somewhat rubbed but can still be deciphered and there is a partial set on the side of the lid in which the date letter is very clear. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter w for 1921 and the quite rubbed but distinctive A Bros Ltd in a rounded triangle makers' mark for Adie Brothers Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
