George III Crested Silver Mustard Pot, London 1794
Here we have an elegant George III Sterling Silver Mustard Pot in the classic late 18th century style. The pot is oval with straight sides, a scroll handle and an urn style finial. The base is open for ease of removal of the blue glass liner. There is a crest on the side of the body featuring an arm in armour holding a spear.
The mustard pot is made in London by Samuel Godbehere and Edward Wigan and dates to 1794. The wonderfully named Samuel Godbehere registered his first mark in 1784 before being joined in partnership by Edward Wigan in 1786 and later James Boult in 1800. The firm remained in business up until around 1819.
Condition is generally very good although the lid doesn't sit quite true on the body and there is some salt marking to the inside of the pot. The blue glass liner is probably not the original but is a good fit. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The mustard pot is 10cm / 3.9ins from rim to handle, 5cm / 1.9ins across and stands 8.2cm / 3.2ins high. Without the blue glass liner, it weighs in at a substantial 106.3g / 3.7oz of solid Sterling Silver and with the glass liner included it weighs 204.9g / 7.2oz.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are nice and easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter t for 1794, the George III duty mark and the SG over EW makers' mark for Samuel Godbehere and Edward Wigan. In addition, the inside of the lid is marked with the lion passant and the makers' mark.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the mustard pot.
