Pair of Edwardian Silver Salts, Wm. Oliver, 1901/2

1 of 6
This is an attractive Pair of Edwardian Sterling Silver Open Salts with their original Blue Glass Liners. The salts are rectangular with rounded corners and stand on four ball feet. The bodies are pierced all the way round with a geometric design.
The salts were made in Birmingham by William Oliver with one dating to 1901 and the other to 1902. William Oliver established his firm in Birmingham in the mid 1880s, registering marks in both Birmingham and Chester (in the 1890s). His mark is most commonly seen on small items of tableware, belt buckles and smoking accessories. He remained in business up until around 1910.
Condition is good, with no dings or dents, just a small amount of salt corrosion on the interiors and the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 120 years of use. There is a tiny nick to the top rim of one glass liner but it remains perfectly usable. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each salt is 5.9cm / 2.3ins by 4.2cm / 1.6ins and stands 3.5cm / 1.4ins high. Without the glass liners, the pair weigh in at 37.1g / 1.3oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together they weigh 130.5g / 4.6oz.
The hallmarks, on the top bands of the bodies, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter b for 1901 or c for 1902 and the W.O makers' mark for William Oliver.
