This is an attractive Mid-19th Century Dutch 833 Silver Cake or Pastry Serving Slice. The slice has a scalloped oblong shaped blade pierced with a scrolling foliate design. The handle has a similar chased flower and foliage design and there is a crest of a dragon's head engraved at the base of the blade.

The serving slice was made in Amsterdam in The Netherlands and dates to 1853. The makers' mark is a little rubbed but appears to be the letters J M S beneath a hammer. Unfortunately we haven't as yet been able to identify this silversmith.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, no damage to the pierced section and just the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 170 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The serving slice is 18.3cm / 7.2ins long and 7.9cm / 3.1ins wide. It weighs in at a respectable 46.6g / 1.6oz of solid silver.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the handle, are a little rubbed but can mostly be read. They show the lion passant above the number 2 for 833/1000 grade silver, the Minerva's head assay mark with a letter A on the helmet for Amsterdam, the date letter T for 1853 and the J M S beneath a hammer makers' mark.
