Victorian Silver Sovereign Case, Birmingham, 1897
Here we have a good quality late Victorian Sterling Silver Sovereign Case. The case is plain on the outside, with no initials or personalisation of any kind. The coin holder tray on the inside has an engine turned top.
The sovereign case was made in Birmingham by silversmiths Saunders & Shepherd and dates to 1897. Cornelius Saunders and Frank Shepherd began their partnership in London’s Holborn Circus district in 1878. This was a major centre for silversmiths, goldsmiths and jewellers for many years in the 19th and 20th centuries. The firm were both manufacturers and retailers, specialising in small silver items for personal or domestic use and registered marks in London, Birmingham, Chester and Sheffield. The company remained in business up until the late 1930s.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 125 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The sovereign case measures 4.4cm / 1.7ins from the top of the ring to the hinge, 2.9cm / 1.1ins in diameter and is 1.4cm / 0.55ins deep. It weighs in at a respectable 18.3g / 0.64oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside of the lid, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date latter x for 1897 and the distinctive C S and F S separated by a star makers' mark for Saunders & Shepherd.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the sovereign case.
