Victorian Silver Cream Jug, Jane Brownett, 1883
Here we have a charming Victorian Sterling Silver Cream Jug. The jug is remarkably modern looking with a circular rim base, tapered sides, a scroll handle and a sparrow beak lip. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The cream jug was made in London by silversmith Jane Brownett and dates to 1883. Abraham Brownett and Jane Webb were married in 1838 at which point Abraham was a journeyman goldsmith. He finally set up in business for himself in 1863 but sadly died in 1867 aged about 50. Jane Brownett took over the running of the business and kept the firm going well into the 1890s producing a wide range of good quality silverware.
Condition is good, with just a few tiny dings around the body plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 140 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cream jug measures 7cm / 2.75ins from lip to handle, 5.5cm / 2.1ins across the body and stands 5.8cm / 2.3ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 66.1g / 2.33oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the upper part of the body near the handle, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter H for 1883, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the J B makers' mark for Jane Brownett.
