George V Silver Mounted Claret Jug, B'ham, 1920
This is an elegant George V Sterling Silver Mounted Cut Glass Claret Jug. The jug is indicative of the transitional period from Art Nouveau to Art Deco with a baluster shaped body and curving lines of small lozenge cut decoration. The silver lid and handle have simple clean lines. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The claret jug was made in Birmingham by the renowned firm of John Grinsell & Sons and dates to 1920. Originally established in Birmingham in 1864 as Grinsell & Bourne, John Grinsell left the partnership and set up in business with his four sons in 1871 as John Grinsell & Sons. The new firm was quickly successful and opened showrooms in the City of London and in Glasgow. They specialised in silver mounted glassware and ceramics and remained in business until the 1950s when they were taken over by Barker-Ellis.
Condition is very good, with no chips or cracks in the glass, no dings or dents in the silver and just the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 100 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The claret jug stands 26cm / 10.2ins high and is 9.3cm / 3.7ins in diameter. It weighs in at 770g / 27.2oz.
The hallmarks, at the bottom of the collar, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter v for 1920 and the J.G & S makers' mark for John Grinsell & Sons.
Shipping in the UK is £16 by Royal Mail Special Delivery which includes cover for the value and the weight of the claret jug.
