Here we have a top quality George V Sterling Silver Jug from the 1920s. The baluster shaped jug has a round base, a broad lip and a leather wrapped handle making it suitable for use with hot water, hot milk or other hot contents. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The jug is made in London by the famous Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company and dates to 1924. The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company was founded in 1880 by William Gibson and John Langman and took premises at 112 Regent Street, London, W1. They quickly established themselves as high quality silversmiths, goldsmiths and jewellers selling both their own products manufactured in London and Sheffield and pieces supplied by other reputable manufacturers. In 1952 they were merged into the fellow Regent Street firm of Garrard & Co.
Condition is extremely good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after nearly 100 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
As you would expect from the Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co, this is a well made piece in a good, heavy gauge of silver. The jug is 11.5cm / 4.5ins from lip to handle, 7cm / 2.7ins across at its widest point and stands 15.5cm / 6.1ins high. It weighs in at a very substantial 308.3g / 10.9oz.
The hallmarks on the side of the body are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter II for 1924 and the distinctive G & S Co Ltd in a trefoil makers' mark for The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the jug.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
