George III Silver Mustard Pot, John Emes, 1799

Here we have a fine quality large George III Sterling Silver Mustard Pot with its original Blue Glass Liner. The mustard pot is oval with a flat base and a domed lid topped by a ball finial. The handle and thumb rest are plain. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The mustard pot was made in London by noted silversmith John Emes and dates to 1799. John Emes was an important silversmith in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. He formed an initial partnership with Henry Chawner in 1796 but took over the business after Chawner’s retirement in 1798. He produced a wide range of tableware of consistently good quality and attractive design. After his death in 1808 the business was continued by his wife Rebecca who was soon joined by Edward Barnard, who had been her husband’s journeyman. After Rebecca’s death in 1828, the firm became Edward Barnard & Sons.
Condition is very good, with just a couple of tiny dings in the body of the pot and the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 220 years of good service on the dining table. There are no chips or cracks in the glass liner. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The mustard pot is of a good size measuring 10.1cm / 3.98ins from rim to handle, 5.5cm / 2.17ins across and 8.3cm / 3.27ins high. Without the glass liner it weighs in at a substantial 102.3g / 3.6oz of solid Sterling Silver including the liner it weighs 231.8g / 8.2oz.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter D for 1799, the George III duty mark and the distinctive J.E makers' mark for John Emes.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the mustard pot.
