Edwardian Silver Jewellery Box, Zimmerman, 1910
This is an elegant Edwardian Sterling Silver Jewellery Box. The box is circular and stands on three spreading feet. The top of the lid has a bead and bar decorative pattern around the rim whilst the inside is gilded. The base has a burgundy satin lining. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The antique jewellery box was made in Birmingham by A & J Zimmerman and dates to 1910. The firm was founded by brothers Arthur & John Zimmerman in Birmingham in 1879, operating from premises at Regent Place in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. They later opened a second premises and a showroom in London. The firm produced a wide range of silverware of consistently good quality up until they ceased trading around 1930.
Condition is very good, with just a few pinprick dings in the lid and the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 110 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The box is 7.6cm / 3ins in diameter and stands 3.8cm / 1.5ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 104.5g / 3.7oz with just a tiny amount of this being made up by the satin lining.
The hallmarks, on the side of the body and the lid, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter l for 1910 and the A & J. Z makers' mark for A & J Zimmerman.
