Art Nouveau Silver Cream Jug, H. Matthews, 1895
This is an attractive Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Cream Jug from the late 19th century. The jug has a flat circular base, a broad lip and a sweeping Art Nouveau handle. The interior is gilded. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The cream jug was made in Birmingham by noted silversmith Henry Matthews and dates to 1895. Henry Matthews registered his mark in 1893 and ran his firm from premises in Vittoria Street in Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter. He made a very wide range of good quality silverware and remained in business up until around 1930.
Condition is good, with just a very shallow crease low down on the body and a couple of dings on the bottom rim plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 125 years of good service. There is no significant wear to the gilt interior. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The jug is 7.7cm / 3ins from lip to handle, 4.6cm / 1.8ins across the body and 7.4cm / 2.9ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 65.9g / 2.3oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the shoulder of the jug, are somewhat rubbed but can still be deciphered. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the Gothic date letter v for 1895 and the H M makers' mark for Henry Matthews.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the cream jug.
