Victorian Silver Salt & Pepper Shakers, 1882/3
This is a very elegant pair of Victorian Sterling Silver Salt & Pepper Shakers. The shakers are of classic baluster form with beautiful chased swag decoration around the bodies and the feet. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind. The pierced lids have slightly different patterns, one with larger holes for salt and one with smaller holes for ground pepper.
The two shakers are made in London by Charles Edwards with one dating to 1882 and the other to 1883. Charles Edwards was a very fine silversmith who was active in London from the late 1870s until the early 1920s. He produced a small number of pieces but always of very good quality.
Condition is good with no dings or dents and just a very small amount of salt corrosion around the bases and only the most minimal superficial surface wear that has to be expected after nearly 140 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The pepper stands 8.5cm / 3.3ins high and the salt stands 8.3cm / 3.2ins high. The pair together weigh in at a substantial 81.4g / 2.9oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the sides of the bodies and the inside rims of the lids are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the Queen Victoria duty mark, the date letters G for 1882 or H for 1883 and the C.E makers' mark for Charles Edwards.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the shakers.
