Cut Glass Preserve Pot with Silver Lid Sheffield 1918
This is an attractive and functional George V Cut Glass Preserve Pot with a Sterling Silver lid. The glass pot is a flattened sphere with a deep cut design of crosses in panels all around the body and a star cut on the base. The silver lid is stepped with a ring handle and a notch for the jam spoon. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The preserve pot is made in Sheffield by well known silversmiths Harrison Brothers & Howson and dates to 1918. The firm was founded in 1847 by James & Henry Harrison and James Howson. The firm manufactured in Sheffield and had a London showroom. It remained in the two families until the company was taken over by Viner's in 1923 although they retained the name as a separate brand up until around 1980.
Condition of the cut glass jar is extremely good with no chips or cracks. The silver lid is slightly out of shape but still fits snugly onto the top of the jar and is fully functional. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The preserve jar stands 9.7cm / 3.8ins high and is 9.3cm / 3.6ins in diameter at its widest point. The lid by itself weighs a very respectable 44.9g / 1.6oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together the pot weighs in at 488.8g / 17.2oz.
The hallmarks, on the top of the lid, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter a for 1918 and the G H makers' mark for George Howson of Harrison Brothers & Howson.
