2 x Edwardian Pepper Shakers, Chester, 1910

1 of 6
This is a smart pair of Edwardian Sterling Silver Pepper Shakers. The pepper shakers are cylindrical with pull off lids. They have a crest of a hand holding a scorpion on their fronts, which is used as the family crest by the Colle family and the Hinckes/Hincks/Hinks family.
The pepper shakers are were made by Martin, Hall & Co of Sheffield and assayed in Chester in 1910, the last year of the Edwardian era. The firm was founded by Richard Martin and brothers Ebenezer & Joshua Hall in 1854 as the successor to Roberts & Hall, in which Ebenezer had been a partner. The company manufactured in Sheffield and had showrooms in London, Birmingham, Glasgow and Sydney, Australia. They participated in many international exhibitions and won a number of awards. The firm went into decline with the economic downturn of the 1930s and had ceased trading by 1936.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. The lids fit securely on top so you can shake with confidence onto your dinner. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each shaker is 5.7cm / 2.2ins high and 3cm / 1.2ins in diameter and the pair together weighs in at a very respectable 72.3g / 2.5oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the bodies of the shakers, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword & three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter K for 1910 and the RM over EH in a diamond makers' mark for Richard Martin & Ebenezer Hall of Martin, Hall & Co.
