Victorian Silver Mounted Hip Flask, 1889
Here we have a fine Victorian Glass Hip Flask with a Leather bound body and a Sterling Silver hinged collar and lid. The flask is broadly oval in shape, curved to fit into a pocket and has a reinforced foot so that it will stand on a flat surface. The dark brown leather jacket has a slot on each side so that you can see how full the flask is. The silver lid has a twist lock mechanism and a monogram of AL engraved onto the top.
The flask is made in Sheffield by renowned silversmiths James Dixon & Sons and dates to 1889. With a history dating back to around 1806, James Dixon & Sons was one of Sheffield's foremost silversmiths and electroplaters. They were highly successful and remained in business up until the mid 1980s when they were absorbed into British Silverware.
Condition of the glass flask is very good with no chips or cracks. The leather jacket has aged well and just has a few little cracks and creases. The silver lid has one flat spot on the side and a shallow dent in the top, which is not surprising after over 130 years of primarily outdoor adventures. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The hip flask is 14.8cm / 5.6ins high and 8cm / 3.1ins across. It weighs in at 243.3g / 8.6oz.
The hallmarks on the side of the lid are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter W for 1889, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the J.D & S makers' mark for James Dixon & Sons Ltd. The collar is marked with the lion passant, the makers' mark and the bugle & banner trademark of James Dixon & Sons Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the hip flask.
