Victorian Silver Hip Flask, Charles Boyton, 1868
Here we have a good quality Victorian Sterling Silver Hip Flask. The plain flask is oval and concave on one side to fit comfortably into a pocket. The screw top lid is cork lined to help minimise drips. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The hip flask was made in London by renowned silversmith Charles Boyton (II) and dates to 1868. The firm was founded in London by Charles Boyton (I) in 1825, based at a number of locations before finally settling in Clerkenwell. They established a reputation for fine workmanship and design that was maintained across four generations of Charles Boytons until, along with many other firms, they hit economic difficulties in the early 1930s. In 1934 a new company was formed called Charles Boyton & Son Ltd that continued into the 1970s but no members of the Boyton family were involved in this.
Condition is good, with just a small bruise on one corner of the flask plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 155 years of good service, much of it probably spent in a pocket on outdoor adventures. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The flask is 10cm / 3.9ins high, 6.7cm / 2.6ins across and 1.7cm / 0.67ins deep. It weighs in at a substantial 110g / 3.88oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks are split between the front and back of the flask with one side showing the lion passant for Sterling Silver and the leopard's head assay mark for London and the other showing the date letter n for 1868 and the Queen Victoria duty mark. Both sides have the C B makers' mark for Charles Boyton (II).
Shipping in the UK is £11.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the bvalue of the hip flask.
