Victorian Silver Hip Flask, Brockwell & Son, 1891
Here we have a good quality Victorian Cut Glass Hip Flask with a Sterling Silver Lid and Drinking Cup. The cup has a gilt interior and the lid has a cork inset to help minimise any leaks. There is a Gothic monogram of the initials W & M on the front of the cup and the top of the cap.
The hip flask is made in London in 1891/2 by Brockwell & Son and retailed by J. Crichton & Co of George Street, Edinburgh. Founded by Henry Titterton Brockwell in the mid-1870s, Brockwell & Son specialised in hip flasks and other silver mounted items such as wallets and cologne bottles. James Crichton & Co were a prominent Edinburgh retailer specialising in watches, clocks, silverware and jewellery throughout the Victorian era.
The hip flask has definitely seen some use and one can imagine it has been a companion on many highland and moorland walks and adventures. There are some dings to the lid and some chips to the glass around the rim of the drinking cup. However it remains watertight and is perfectly usable. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The hip flask stands 12.2cm / 4.8ins high, is 6.3cm / 2.5ins across and 2.7cm / 1.1ins deep. The cup weighs in at 42.9g / 1.5oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together the hip flask weighs 256.5g / 9oz.
The hallmarks on both the cup and the lid are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter Q on the cup for 1891 and R on the lid for 1892 and the H T B makers' mark for Henry Titterton Brockwell of Brockwell & Son.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the hip flask.
