Victorian Silver Gilt Salt, Walker & Hall, 1897
Here we have a charming late Victorian Sterling Silver Gilt Open Salt in the form of a flower. Unusually the salt is gilded both inside and outside, although the outer gilding is wearing thin in places. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The salt is made in Sheffield by world famous silversmiths and electroplaters Walker & Hall and dates to 1897. The firm was founded by George Walker in 1845 with Henry Hall joining in 1853 to form Walker & Hall. Hugely successful and very highly regarded they remained in business until they were merged with Mappin & Webb and Elkington & Co to form British Silverware in 1963.
Condition is good with no dings or dents and just some wear to the gilding on the outside of the body as mentioned above. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The salt 5.7cm / 2.2ins in diameter and 1.8cm / 0.71ins high. It weighs in at 14.9g / 0.52oz of solid Sterling Silver Gilt.
