Victorian Silver & MOP Bookmark, Birmingham, 1900
This is a lovely late Victorian Sterling Silver trowel bookmark with a Mother of Pearl handle. It's a very neat item that slides nicely onto the page and does exactly the job it was designed for. The bookmark was made in Birmingham in 1900 by silversmith William Henry Leather who operated from premises in Pitsford Street from around 1895 up to about about 1930. Silver bookmarks were a particular speciality of his.
The bookmark is in generally good condition with just a very small bend to the silver tongue from normal use, not surprising after 120 years! The Mother of Pearl handle is in very good condition. It remains perfectly functional and very attractive. A perfect gift for a bookworm! Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The bookmark is 7cm long and weighs 5g, which does of course include the Mother of Pearl handle.
The hallmarks on the tongue, which are well struck and clear to read are the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter "a" for 1900 and the W.H.L. makers' mark for William Henry Leather.
