Pair of Victorian Silver Shell Salts, Chester 1895
Here we have a pair of late Victorian Sterling Silver Open Salts in the shape of scallop shells. One salt has a gilt interior and the other is plain silver, so it is possible that the gilded one was intended for salt and the plain one for pepper as apart from that they are a perfect match.
The salts are made by James Deakin & Sons and assayed in Chester in 1895. James Deakin & Sons were a very successful and highly respected firm based in Sheffield. Like many silversmiths in both Sheffield & especially Birmingham, they would sometimes send smaller items to the less busy assay office in Chester to be hallmarked. With the Chester office closing in 1962, items with Chester hallmarks are much sought after by collectors.
Condition is good with no dings or dents and just the surface wear that you would expect in items of this age and use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The salts are 4.7cm / 1.8ins across, 5cm / 2ins long and 2cm / 0.8ins high. The pair together weigh in at 18.3g / 0.65oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the inside of the shells are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and 3 wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter M for 1895 and the JD over WD makers' mark for James Deakin & Sons.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
