George IV Silver Mustard Pot, London, 1826
This is an elegant George IV Sterling Silver Mustard Pot with its blue glass liner. The pot is a bulbous oval with a gadrooned rim, acanthus handle and shell thumb rest. Unusually, rather than just initials or a crest, the full name William Hudson is engraved across the front of the body.
The mustard pot is made in London by Richard Pearce and George Burrows and dates to 1826. George Burrows inherited his father's business (also George, est. 1769) in 1801 in partnership with his mother Alice. After her death in 1819 he continued by himself before partnering with Richard Pearce in 1826 and they continued in business together until 1851.
Condition is generally good with just a tiny gap in the seam down one side of the body plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 195 years of good service. The blue glass liner has no chips or cracks. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The mustard is of substantial size measuring 9.7cm / 3.8ins from rim to handle, 9.7cm / 3.8ins wide and 6.2cm / 2.4ins high. Without the blue glass liner it weighs in at a substantial 149g / 5.2oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together it weighs 236.8g / 8.3oz.
The hallmarks, low down on the back of the body are somewhat rubbed but still readable and backed up by a partial set inside the lid. The full set shows the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter l for 1826, the George IV duty mark and the RP over GB makers' mark for Richard Pearce & George Burrows.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the mustard pot.
