Pair of Meiji 19th Century Japanese Satsuma Vases A Pair of Stunning 19th Century Japanese %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
In General
A pair of stunning 19th Century Satsuma Meiji period Japanese vases c.1868 - 1912. Each vase is ornately hand decorated and gilded in typical Satsuma polychrome enamels. The vases comprise 6 panels each with different scenes interspersed with side panels of enamelled flowering Chrysanthemums. The vases depict finely dressed Samurai Warriors and scenes of Elders and Children in the countryside.

The neck and base are painted with elaborate borders consisting of stylised patterns with different designs on each vase - accented with raised enamels. Moriage, a Japanese word that translates as "heap up" is a trailed slip decoration originally used to indicate the gilt beading seen on these vases and Japanese pottery generally.
