Outstanding Japanese Meiji Period Lacquer Screen
This is a fine example of Japanese lacquer work from the Meiji period with outstanding hand painted detail and wonderful gilding. The two fold screen has a wonderful rich depth of colour throughout with superb overlaid detail in the form meticulously carved geese in flight around a dusky moonlit sky descending into marshland. The screen is constructed in the form of panels which are set into the solid rosewood frame mounted with beautifully hand tooled metal brackets. The upper arched panels have raised lacquer work depicting majestic cranes which have the most beautiful gilding. The lower panels have superb hand painted floral designs with delicate butterflies and gilded detail. There is an area of cracking with an historic repair to the upper right panel best seen in photo 6. The screen is a fine quality piece that dates from around 1890 and makes a really dramatic impact in any situation.
The screen is 179 cm high and each panel is 74 cm wide.
