Large Chinese Gilt Bronze Cloisonne Incense Burner
In General
Stunningly designed 11.2 inches Chinese gilt bronze cloisonne tripod incense burner, Qianlong marked. It has dramatic double dragon handles and a large Fu Lion Dog finial. It is also well cast and heavy weighing 2.09 Kg.
The censer is highly decorated over the whole body and cover and features a gilt bronze image of Buddha on both the front and rear of the pot flanked by beautiful stylised lotus flowerheads in cloisonne enamel being the sacred symbol of Buddhism. There are other flower and foliage patterns all in colourful cloisonne enamel on a turquoise ground. The enamel decoration is vibrant with a good colour. The collar features four dragons in gilt bronze and two stylised cloisonne enamel flowerheads behind the top of each handle which is a lovely feature.
The gilt bronze cover features a pierced design with elaborate dragons on either side topped with a large gilt Fu Lion dog finial. The gilt bronze legs with paw feet issue from lion masks, with two large and dramatic dragon handles on either side of the pot. The interior has a charcoal black finish.
It has been created by skilled craftsmen in the traditional style showing excellent detailing.
Cloisonné is an ancient and highly skilled technique of creating designs on metal vessels with coloured glass paste known as enamel placed within enclosures made of copper - called cloisons. By the end of the 19th century in China and Japan, the art of cloisonné enamelling had become a highly successful trade both in terms of manufacture and export. The 'Golden Age' of cloisonné enamels - the peak of artistic and technological perfection - was reached during the years 1880 to 1910. Incredible pieces were made for display at the great World Exhibitions of that time as well as for export
