This is a charming George V Sterling Silver set of Salt & Pepper Shakers on a stand. The two shakers are designed as barrels, with slightly domed lids to allow for the single salt hole and the multiple pepper holes. The stand is in a figure of eight shape with the base standing on four bun feet, the handle and finger ring rising from the centre and the two holding rings sweeping down from the handle in an Art Nouveau style.
The two shakers are a great size, being ideal for use either on a dining table or to sit on a tray.
The set is made in Birmingham, England by the Gorham Manufacturing Company, with the salt and pepper shakers dating to 1910 and the stand to 1911. Gorham, one of America's most famous silver companies, was founded by Jabez Gorham in Providence, Rhode Island in 1831. They opened their first British store in London in 1894 and in 1909 they bought a silver works in Birmingham and began to manufacture in the UK, which they continued into the 1920s.
Condition of the set is very good with just a few salt marks on the base, one truly tiny ding in the body of the pepper and just the superficial surface wear that would expect after 110 years of good service. The stand sits securely on a flat surface without rocking. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The shakers are each 5.1cm / 2ins tall and 2.5cm / 0.9ins in diameter. The stand is 9.3cm / 3.7ins high, 8cm / 3.1ins wide and 3.5cm / 1.4ins deep. All together the set weighs a very respectable 80.5g / 2.8oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks are clear to read, although the makers' mark is a little rubbed on each piece. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver and the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, with the date letter l for 1910 on the two shakers and the date letter m for 1911 on the stand. All three have the G M Co makers' mark for Gorham Manufacturing Company Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery Parcel Post, which includes cover for the value of the set.
