George III Silver Mustard Pot, S. Hougham, 1799
Here we have a fine quality George III Sterling Silver Mustard Pot with a Blue Glass Liner. The pot is oval with a scroll handle and a domed hinged lid topped with an urn finial. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The mustard pot was made in London by renowned silversmith Solomon Hougham and dates to 1799. Charles Hougham registered his mark at Goldsmiths Hall in London in 1769. He was a fine silversmith who primarily produced spoons and flatware but also some other good pieces of tableware. Charles’ brother Solomon took over the business after Charles’ death in 1793 and expanded the range of items they produced. Around 1818, Solomon went into a brief partnership with Solomon Royes and John East Dix, who continued the business after Solomon Hougham’s death.
Overall condition is good with no dings or dents in the silver. There is a small split where the upper part of the handle joins the body but it remains securely attached. There are some truly tiny nibbles around the top rim of the glass liner, which remains perfectly usable. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The mustard pot measures 10.2cm / 4ins from rim to handle, 4.9cm / 1.9ins across the body and 8.2cm / 3.2ins high to the top of the finial. Without the glass liner it weighs in at a substantial 97.3g / 3.4oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together it weighs 198.2g / 7oz.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter D for 1799, the George III duty mark and the S H makers' mark for Solomon Hougham.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the mustard pot.
