Edwardian Sterling Silver Stamp Case, B'ham, 1907
Here we have a beautiful Edwardian Sterling Silver Double Stamp Holder. The stamp holder has engine turned decoration on the top surrounding a spray of flowers and a scroll decorated blank cartouche in the corner. A small turquoise button is used to slide out the gilded inner tray.
The stamp holder was made in Birmingham by the Ahronsberg Brothers, who patented this particular design, and dates to 1907. The three Ahronsberg brothers: Judah, Albert & Lionel, established their firm in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter in around 1890. They made a range of silver jewellery, silver items for personal use and small pieces of tableware. During the First World War they changed the family name to the less Germanic Albury Brothers and remained in business under that name until the 1940s.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 115 years of use. The inner tray slides out smoothly and stays securely shut. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The stamp holder measures 5.2cm / 2ins by 3.8cm / 1.5ins when closed and weighs in at a respectable 19.0g / 0.67oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter h for 1907 and the A.BROS makers' mark for the Ahronsberg Brothers.
