Edwardian Card & Stamp Case, Sampson Mordan, 1909
Here we have a superb quality Edwardian Sterling Silver Visiting Card and Stamp Case in the Arts & Crafts style. The case has an all over planished or hammered finish and is suspended by two chains from a finger ring handle. The interior has a red silk lining. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The case was made by Sampson Mordan & Co and assayed in Chester in 1909. Sampson Mordan established his company in London in 1815 and in 1822 he was granted the world’s first patent for a mechanical pencil. It was these that would remain the backbone of the company’s fortunes. After a partnership with Gabriel Riddle from 1823 to 1836 was dissolved, the firm was renamed S. Mordan & Co, with Sampson’s sons, Sampson Jr and Augustus, taking over in 1843. Alongside their pencils business, the firm specialised in small silver novelties such as letter openers, bookmarks, decanter labels, pin cushions, inkwells and cigar cutters. In 1941 the factory was destroyed by enemy bombing and the firm ceased trading. They are one of the most widely collected of all silversmiths.
Condition is good with just two small dings on one side of the body plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 115 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The case measures 9cm / 3.5ins by 6.3cm / 2.5ins and is 17.6cm / 6.9ins with the chain handle fully extended. It weighs in at a very respectable 83.0g / 2.9oz of which just a tiny amount is the silk lining and the rest is solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the outside of the case, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the cursive date letter I for 1909 and the S M & Co makers' mark for Sampson Mordan & Co. There is also a registered design number of 512871, which shows that the original design dates to 1907.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the case.
