Edwardian Silver Open Salt, William Aitken, 1906

This is a smart Edwardian Sterling Silver Open Salt with its blue glass liner. The salt is oval in shape with slightly raised ends. The body is decorated all around with engraved floral and foliate swags. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The salt is made in Birmingham by noted silversmith William Aitken and dates to 1906. William Aitken was active at premises in Vyse Street in Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter between the late 1880s and the early 1920s. His firm produced a wide range of silver items for domestic and personal use of consistently good quality.
Condition is good with no dings or dents in the silver. There is some salt corrosion to the inside of the silver but this is not visible when the blue glass liner is in place. The liner is in very good condition with no chips or cracks. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The salt is 6.6cm / 2.6ins long, 3.9cm / 1.5ins wide and 2.6cm / 1in high. Without the blue glass liner it weighs in at 16.0g / 0.56oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together it weighs 49.1g / 1.7oz.
The hallmarks, on the body just below the top rim, are a little rubbed but still easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter g for 1906 and the W.A makers' mark for William Aitken.
Shipping in the UK is £6.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
