Chinese Silver Salt, Probably Sun Shing, c.1800-30
Here we have a fine quality Chinese Silver Open Salt from around the early part of the 19th century. The salt is quatrefoil in shape with each of the four panels having different decoration. The first panel has a gentleman with a fan outside a house, the second is a clump of bamboo, the third is tree blossom and the fourth is a flowering plant. The salt stands on four ridged feet and has a clear glass liner.
The salt is most probably by Sun Shing, a Canton-based export company that traded in silver that imitated Western forms but often with Chinese style decoration. They were in operation between around 1790 & 1885 and are best known for their beautifully decorated tableware. This salt is marked SS on the base, which fits with their items produced in the early 19th century.
Condition is good, with no dings or dents. There is some salt corrosion on the inside base below the glass liner and a few small spots around the rim but that is only to be expected after around 200 years of use. There are a couple of small nibbles around the top of the clear glass liner. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The salt is 5.5cm x 4.6cm across the top rim and stands 4cm high. Without the glass liner it weighs in at 31.6g.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
