Cased Pair of Silver Napkin Rings, T.S, 1935/36
This is a very smart cased pair of Sterling Silver Napkin Rings from the mid-1930s. The napkin rings are oval in shape with a folded rim around both top and bottom. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind, making them ideal as a gift or for moving on to a new owner.
The napkin rings are made in Birmingham by T.S, with one dating to 1935 and one to 1936. As the date letter changed in July each year, the chances are they were both made in 1936, one pre-July and one post-July. Very little is known about the silversmith T.S, not even his or her name! He or she was only active in the 1930s and the mark is most commonly seen on flatware or tableware.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 85 years of good service. The box is also in good condition and the hinges and clasp are all in working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each napkin ring is 5cm / 1.9ins long, 3.7cm / 1.4ins across and 2.2cm / 0.8ins high. The pair together, unboxed, weigh in at 23.2g / 0.82oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the outer side of each ring are nice and easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letters L for 1935 and M for 1936 and the T S makers' mark for the mysterious T.S.
