Art Nouveau Silver Backed Hairbrush, B'ham, 1907
This is a beautiful Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Backed Hairbrush from the Edwardian era. The head of the brush is oval with an emotive embossed design of an angel carrying a child through the clouds. The ribbed handle has a classic Nouveau style flower motif on either side. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The hairbrush was made in Birmingham by respected silversmiths Robert Pringle & Sons and dates to 1907. Robert Pringle started his business in London's Clerkenwell Road around 1870, with his sons joining the business in the mid-1880s. The company manufactured in London, Sheffield and Birmingham. They remained a family run firm until finally closing in the late 1950s. They made a wide range of silverware for domestic and personal use but are best known for their consistently good quality tableware and flatware.
Condition is good, with just a few shallow dings around the outer rim of the head. The bristles are clean and in overall good condition with just one or two loose ones as you would expect after over 115 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The brush is 24cm / 9.4ins long, 8.9cm / 3.5ins across and 4cm / 1.6ins high. It weighs in at 179.7g / 6.3oz.
The hallmarks, at the top of the brush head, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter h for 1907 and the R.P makers' mark for Robert Pringle & Sons.
Shipping in the UK is £6.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
