9 x Art Nouveau Silver Buttons, Turnbull Bros 1901
Here we have a beautiful Set of Nine Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Buttons from the Edwardian period. The buttons are circular with a pierced design of a daisy type flower with leaves.
The buttons were made in Birmingham with eight of them being made by Turnbull Brothers and one, of identical design, by Reynolds & Westwood. They date to 1901 apart from one of the Turnbull Brothers buttons, which dates to 1900.
The Turnbull Brothers registered their mark at the Birmingham assay office in 1898. They produced a range of good quality tableware, flatware and items for personal use, particularly buttons and manicure sets. The firm remained in business until about 1925.
Reynolds & Westwood was founded by John Reynolds and George Frederick Westwood in the mid 1890s and operated out of premises in Vyse Street in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. They produced a wide range of small silver items, notably buttons, mostly for personal use and of consistently good quality. The firm ceased trading around 1911/12.
Condition is very good, with no dings, dents or damage and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each button is 2.6cm in diameter and the set of nine together weighs in at a very respectable 60.2g of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, below the main flower, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter b for 1901 (or a for 1900 on one button) and the T BROS makers' mark for Turnbull Brothers, apart from one which has the R & W makers' mark for Reynolds & Westwood.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the buttons.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
