Art Deco Silver Condiment Set, Walker & Hall, 1927
This is a very stylish Art Deco Sterling Silver 4 Piece Condiment Set. The set is made in Birmingham by world famous silversmiths Walker & Hall and dates to 1927, with the exception of the spoons which were made in Sheffield the same year. Walker & Hall were based in Sheffield but did also have pieces made in Birmingham to their very strict specifications.
The set comprises a pepper shaker, a mustard pot and two open salts. The salt spoons are the original ones that came with the set but unfortunately at some point in the past the original mustard spoon has been lost and replaced with one of the same design but made by Sanders & Mackenzie in 1960. The four pieces are in a classic Art Deco stepped design and come with their original blue glass liners.
Condition of the pepper shaker and the mustard is very good with just the minimal surface wear you would expect from years of use. The blue glass liner of the mustard pot has no chips or cracks. The two open salts do have some salt corrosion on the inside, where salt has got trapped between the blue glass liners and the inside of the silver container, however this isn't visible once the blue glass liners are in place. The two blue glass liners each have a very small nibble to the rim but no cracks and remain perfectly functional. All three spoons are in very good condition. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The pepper shaker is 7.3cm / 2.8" high and 3.2cm / 1.25" wide across the base. The mustard pot is 4.8cm / 1.9" high, 4.6cm / 1.8" wide (not including the handle) and 3.3cm / 1.25" deep. The salts are 2.9cm / 1.1" high, 4.6cm / 1.8" wide and 3.3cm / 1.25" deep. The salt spoons are 5.7cm / 2.25" long and the mustard spoon is 6.5cm / 2.5" long. The whole set, excluding the blue glass liners, weighs in at a substantial 124.6g / 4.4oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the undersides of the pieces are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter "C" for 1927 and the W & H makers' mark for Walker & Hall. The salt spoons have the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter "k" for 1927 and the W & H makers' mark for Walker & Hall. The mustard spoon has the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter "L" for 1960 and the S & M makers' mark for Sanders & Mackenzie.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery Parcel Post, which includes cover for the value of the set.
