19th C. Dutch Silver Cream Jug, Schoonhoven, 1891
This is a charming small 19th Century Dutch 833 Silver Cream Jug. The jug has a round base and a sparrow beak lip. The body of the jug has a variety of images from both Greek mythology and 19th century Dutch life embossed on to it and the scrolling handle is decorated with a sea serpent.
The cream jug is made in Schoonhoven in The Netherlands and dates to 1891. The Dutch are very good at hiding their silver marks within the design of their pieces and we have not been able to find the makers' mark but there may well be one lurking in the landscape somewhere!
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 130 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The jug is 6.2cm / 2.4ins from lip to handle, 4.4cm / 1.7ins in diameter across the base and stands 5.3cm / 2.1ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 53.0g / 1.87oz of solid 833 grade silver.
In the usual Dutch style, the hallmarks are scattered around the jug. The underside of the base has the lion passant above the number 2 for 833/1000 grade silver. High on the body, just below the rim, is the Minerva stamp with the letter M on the helmet which shows that it was assayed in Schoonhoven. On the handle is the date letter G for 1891.
