William IV Silver Teaspoon, Benoni Stephens, 1837 William IV Georgian Silver %%alt5%%
This is a good quality William IV Sterling Silver Teaspoon in the classic Old English pattern. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The teaspoon was made in London by silversmith Benoni Stephens and dates to 1837, the last year of William IV's short reign. Benoni Stephens registered his first mark at London’s Goldsmith’s Hall in 1834. He primarily produced flatware but his mark is occasionally seen on other items of tableware such as cream jugs and sugar bowls. He remained active through the 1840s but by 1851 he had retired to Somerset where in died in 1858.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 185 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The spoon is 13cm / 5.1ins long and weighs in at 16.6g / 0.58oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter B for 1837, the William IV duty mark and the B S in conjoined circles makers' mark for Benoni Stephens.
