Victorian Small Heart Toast Rack, Hukin & Heath
Here we have a delightful small late Victorian Sterling Silver Four Slice Toast Rack. The dividers are shaped as hearts and sit on an oblong base with rounded corners that stands on four ball feet. There is a round handle on the central divider.
This is very much a toast rack for one and would be the ideal size for a slice of toast cut into four triangles and delivered on a breakfast tray as part of a romantic breakfast in bed.
The toast rack is made in Birmingham by renowned silversmiths Hukin & Heath and dates to 1898. Founded in Birmingham by Jonathan Hukin and John Heath in 1855, the firm is best known for its collaboration with Dr Christopher Dresser and their exhibitions of his groundbreaking designs for them at their London showroom. Hugely successful, the firm remained in business producing a broad range of consistently top quality silverware up until 1953.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the minimal superficial surface wear that you would expect after 125 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The toast rack is 7cm / 2.7ins long by 4cm / 1.6ins wide and stands 6.5cm / 2.5ins high. Despite its small size it weighs in at a very respectable 41.9g / 1.48oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter y for 1898 and the JTH over JHM makers' mark for John Thomas Heath and John Hartshorne Middleton of Hukin & Heath.
Shipping in the UK is £6.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
