Victorian Silver Vinaigrette, George Unite, 1848
Here we have an elegant Early Victorian Sterling Silver Vinaigrette with a Gilt Interior. The vinaigrette is oblong with an engraved crosshatch design on the top and a lozenge and leaf design on the underside. The grille inside is engraved with a flower and scroll design. The cartouche on the lid is engraved with the initials G S C.
The vinaigrette was made in Birmingham by renowned silversmith George Unite and dates to 1848. George Unite & James Hilliard founded the firm in 1825 as Unite & Hilliard. After Hilliard withdrew in the 1830s, George continued by himself before the firm became George Unite & Sons in 1865. The business remained under the management of the Unite family until 1897 when it was taken over by William Lyde who retained the name up until the late 1920s.
Condition is very good, with just a very shallow indent in the base plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 175 years of good service. The vinaigrette shuts securely and the hinges of both the lid and the grille are in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The vinaigrette measures 2.9cm by 2cm by 0.9cm and weighs in at 11.6g of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, split between the inside of the lid and the inside of the base, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter Z for 1848, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the G U makers' mark for George Unite.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the vinaigrette.
