Victorian Silver Toast Rack, Hilliard & Thomason
This is a stylish late Victorian Sterling Silver Four Slice Toast Rack. The toast rack has a bowed oblong base standing on four sculpted bracket legs. The dividers have a wavy design resembling the shape of a loaf of bread and the finger ring handle is oval.
The toast rack was made in Birmingham by well known silversmiths Hilliard & Thomason and dates to 1897. John Hilliard established his business in 1837 in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. Around 1840 he was joined by John Thomason and the firm was renamed Hilliard & Thomason. They were very successful and established a reputation for fine quality small items for domestic, table and personal use. The firm remained in business up until around 1910.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The toast rack measures 9.5cm / 3.7ins by 6.3cm / 2.5ins and stands 9cm / 3.5ins high. It weighs in at a respectable 58.4g / 2oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the base frame, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter x for 1897 and the H & T makers' mark for Hilliard & Thomason.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the toast rack.
