Victorian Silver Teaspoons & Sugar Tongs, 1889
This is a very good quality boxed set of late Victorian Gothic Sterling Silver teaspoons and sugar tongs. The spoons and tongs were made by renowned silversmiths James Dixon & Sons in Sheffield and date to 1889 apart from one spoon, which is identical but dates to 1885. James Dixon & Sons has a history going back to 1806 and they established their factory at Cornish Place in Sheffield in 1824, where they continued producing flatware and cutlery into the early 1990s.
This set of six teaspoons and a pair of sugar tongs are in the seal top form featuring a long narrow stem with a flattened top. The "seal top" finials are in a Puginesque Gothic style and this is repeated on the arms of the sugar tongs.
Both the spoons and tongs are in very good condition with no dings or dents and just the minimal wear you would expect after over 100 years of use. The box is a quite scuffed on the outside but really quite sumptuous on the inside with a deep magenta ruffled silk on the inside of the lid and a matching deep magenta velvet tray holding the spoons and tongs. The hinges are in good condition and the catch is in full working order. The spoons & tongs have no initials or personalisation of any kind. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The hallmarks on the underside of the stems and the inside of the hinge of the sugar tongs are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the gothic date letter "W" for 1889, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the J.D & S makers' mark for James Dixon & Sons. The one earlier spoon has the hallmarks on the back of the bowl, which are all the same apart from the date letter "S" for 1885.
The teaspoons are each 10.2cm long, the sugar tongs are 10.1cm long and the full set (unboxed) weighs in at a respectable 77.2g of solid Sterling Silver.
