Victorian Silver Teaspoon, London, 1897
This is an unusual design late Victorian Sterling Silver Teaspoon in the Arts & Crafts style. The spoon harks back to medieval designs with a round bowl, a curled rim and a long straight stem. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The teaspoon is made in London by the famous Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company and dates to 1897. The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company was founded in 1880 by William Gibson and John Langman and took premises at 112 Regent Street, London, W1. They quickly established themselves as high quality silversmiths, goldsmiths and jewellers selling both their own products manufactured in London and Sheffield and pieces supplied by other reputable manufacturers. In 1952 they were merged into the fellow Regent Street firm of Garrard & Co.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 125 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The teaspoon is 12cm / 4.7ins long and weighs a respectable 11.8g / 0.42oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter b for 1897 and the WG over JL makers' mark for William Gibson and John Langman of The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co.
Shipping in the UK is £4 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For.
