Victorian Silver Sovereign & Vesta Case, 1899
Here we have a top quality late Victorian Sterling Silver Sovereign Case and Vesta Case combination. The case is oblong with rounded corners and has the initials C G B elegantly engraved on one side. The button at one end opens the sovereign case, which is gilded on the inside. The other end, which has a match strike on the outside, opens to reveal the vesta case, which is also gilded on the inside. This is a luxurious item and would have been a very expensive purchase in the 19th century.
The case is made in Birmingham by Britton, Gould & Co and dates to 1899. Walter Hastler Britton and Edward Havelock Gould founded their firm in 1900. They manufactured in Birmingham and London and had their showroom in London's prestigious Hatton Garden district, where they offered a range of high end luxury items. They remained in business up until the start of the Second World War.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents, just slight rubbing to the gilding and the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 120 years of use, much of it probably in a pocket or handbag. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The sovereign / vesta case is 7.8cm / 3ins long, 3cm / 1.2ins across and 1.1cm / 0.43ins deep. It weighs in at 38.0g / 1.34oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The principal hallmarks are on the inside rim of the vesta case and are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter z for 1899 and the B.G & Co makers' mark for Britton, Gould & Co. There are secondary partial hallmarks on the lid of the vesta, the jump ring and the lid and interior of the sovereign case, so you can be sure that this is Sterling Silver throughout.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the case.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
