Victorian Silver Pin Dish, Thomas Hayes, 1894
Here we have an attractive late Victorian Sterling Silver Pin or Trinket Dish. The dish is diamond shaped with a plain, shallow centre and an ornate pierced rim with scrolls and foliate detailing. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The pin dish is made in Birmingham by silversmith Thomas Hayes and dates to 1894. Thomas Hayes registered his first Birmingham mark in 1887 and operated from premises in Spencer Street. His firm made a wide range of silverware and remained in business up until around 1910, latterly as T. Hayes & Co.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and no damage to the intricate pierced border, simply the superficial surface wear that you would expect after nearly 130 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The diamond shaped dish is 12.2cm / 4.8ins long, 7.9cm / 3.1ins wide and sits 0.5cm / 0.2ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 30.0g / 1.06oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the Gothic date letter u for 1894 and the T.H makers' mark for Thomas Hayes.
