Victorian Silver Mustard Pot, Wm. Hutton, 1881
Here we have a good quality decorative Victorian Sterling Silver Mustard Pot with its original blue glass liner. The mustard pot is oval with flower and swag decoration around the body to either side of a shield shaped cartouche with a monogram of the letters J, E, C & T. The lid is domed with a line decorated thumb rest, decoration that is repeated along the length of the handle.
The mustard pot is made in Sheffield by renowned silversmiths William Hutton & Sons and dates to 1881. William Hutton established the firm in Birmingham in 1800 but in 1832 he transferred the entire business to Sheffield. Several generations of the Hutton family followed in the business and additional manufacturing was set up in London and back in Birmingham as well as a showroom in London’s Holborn district. The firm got into trouble in the late 1920s, as so many did, and was taken over by James Dixon & Sons in 1930.
Condition is extremely good with no dings or dents in the silver and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 140 years of service on the dinner table. There is one very small nibble in the rim of the blue glass liner but it remains perfectly usable. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The mustard pot is 9.7cm / 3.8ins from rim to handle, 4.2cm / 1.6ins across and stands 7.1cm / 2.8ins high. Without the blue glass liner it weighs in at a substantial 96.7g / 3.4oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together it weighs 194.0g / 6.8oz.
The hallmarks, on the upper part of the body near the handle, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter O for 1881, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the E H makers' mark for Edward Hutton, who was the head of William Hutton & Sons at this time. There is an additional lion passant and E H makers' mark on the underside of the lid.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the mustard pot.
