Here we have a lovely Victorian Sterling Silver Mug or Christening Cup. The mug has an organic wavy base decorated with leaves. The body has embossed decoration of leaves and flowers and the oval shaped cartouche on the front is blank. The scrolling handle has leaf and pinprick decoration.
The mug was made in Birmingham by highly regarded silversmiths George Unite & Sons and dates to 1866. George Unite & James Hilliard founded the firm in 1825 as Unite & Hilliard. After Hilliard withdrew in the 1830s, George continued by himself before the firm became George Unite & Sons in 1865. The business remained under the management of the Unite family until 1897 when it was taken over by William Lyde who retained the name up until the late 1920s.
Condition is good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 155 years. There is an old small, professionally done, repair just where the handle joins the top rim, which has successfully connected them and is a strong join. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The mug stands 8.5cm / 3.3ins high and is 6.5cm / 2.5ins in diameter. It weighs in at a very respectable 87.6g / 3oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the side just below the rim, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter R for 1866, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the G U makers' mark for George Unite & Sons.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the mug.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
