Victorian Silver Milk Jug, Wakely & Wheeler, 1886
A very good quality heavy Victorian Sterling Silver Milk Jug from the late 19th century. It is made in London by high end silversmiths Wakely & Wheeler and dates to 1886. James Wakely and Frank Clarke Wheeler formed their partnership in the early 1880s and worked together up until around 1910. They had premises in London's Hatton Garden and Dublin's Forde Street and their pieces are found with both London and Dublin hallmarks, this particular Milk Jug being assayed in London. They produced fine quality silver tableware aimed at a wealthy clientele.
The Milk Jug has typically Victorian foliate decoration around the upper part of the body above a reeded lower part. The handle, rim and spout are elegantly plain. The jug is in good overall condition with just a couple of very small dings around the base and the minimal wear you would expect of an item that has seen 134 years of use. It is a very attractive piece which would grace any morning coffee or afternoon tea and would make a lovely addition to a collection. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The Milk Jug is 9cm high, the body is 7cm in diameter and 11.5cm at its widest point from spout to handle. It is made from a good gauge of silver and weighs a very substantial 174g of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the base are well struck and clear to read apart from the makers' mark which is rather rubbed but still decipherable. It is clearer than it appears in the photograph. The marks are the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter "L" for 1886, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the JW over FCW makers' mark for Wakely & Wheeler.
